In 1869, Rutgers and Princeton played the first game of intercollegiate football in a New Brunswick field overlooking the Raritan. For the record, Rutgers came out victorious, by a score of 6 to 4. The current Rutgers gym, one of 14 state-of-the-art competitive and training facilities, now occupies that field. The tradition that started then continues today. From football to fencing, wrestling to lacrosse, close to 1,000 Rutgers men and women actively participate in the university's sports programs. The university sponsors 30 Division I sports, the most of any BIG EAST school. |
